Welcome to the Green Mountain People Website! The Green Mountain People (GMP) is the Census Bureau's Outdoor Club, founded in 1989 by Dave Kashihara and Terry Pennington, hosts a wide variety of fun and interesting year-round outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, tubing, rafting, kayaking, backpacking, and canoeing. Census Bureau employees, contractors, family, and friends are invited to participate. Do you appreciate the outdoors? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Celebrate Nature at the Suitland Bog with a Naturalist's Guided Tour (Tuesday, June 18)

Enjoy a lunchtime interpretive tour of the Suitland Bog with a Naturalist. The Suitland Bog is a wetland site known for its rare plant life. A variety of carnivorous plants, as well as rare and threatened plants, thrive at Suitland Bog.

Join the GMP for our festive annual Harpers Ferry holiday hike. Expect a short, scenic, 2-3 hour hike of moderate difficulty. Most of the afternoon will be available for exploring the town, shopping, and taking in history. A possible optional post-hike Holiday snack and drink location will be determined. Join us in a scenic seven mile hike at Sky Meadows State Park, about 1 hour 15 minutes west of DC. This approximately four hour hike is strenuous in parts, with a total elevation gain of about 1,400. After climbing to the ridge we will make a long loop with the current and old Appalachian trails.

Old Rag, a rocky mountain in the middle of Shenandoah National Park, has the 360-degree panoramas near the summit.

*** This hike is STRENUOUS. The first 2-miles are steady uphill hiking. The next mile or so requires scrambling over boulders and is exposed. The net gain from the parking lot is approximately 2,500 feet. The entire loop is 9 miles and takes about 7 to 8 hours.
