See map: Google Maps Old Rag Old Rag, a rocky mountain in the middle of Shenandoah National Park, has the 360-degree panoramas near the summit. *** This hike is STRENUOUS. The first 2-miles are steady uphill hiking. The next mile or so requires scrambling over boulders and is exposed. The net gain from the parking lot is approximately 2,500 feet. The entire loop is 8 miles and takes about 6 hours. Destination is the parking lot/ranger station. Estimated travel time to the parking lot: About 2 hours from DC Metro Area WEAR: Clothes appropriate for the weather, sturdy hiking boots or sneakers with good traction. It's always cooler at the summit, so it's a good idea to bring something warm (windbreaker). BRING: Snacks/lunch and plenty of water for the trail, a pack to carry food and to shed clothes layers, sun screen and bug repellent |
